Dorris L. Cookerly, 94, of Royal Center passed away at 8:14 p.m., Friday, December 11, 2020 at I.U. Medical Center in Indianapolis.
Born on July 19, 1926 in El Reno, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Bessie (Johnson) Adkisson.
On November 30, 1944 she married Kenneth Cookerly. He was her Kilgore College School bus driver; she was his Rangerette. He preceded her in death on May 16, 2012.
Dorris was a retired florist and was formerly employed at Warners Greenhouse and Pleasant Hill Flower Shop in Logansport. She formerly owned and operated Calico Shed Flower Shop in Royal Center.
She was a member of Royal Center United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing Euchre with several card groups including the long time Friday night friends and several that met at the Bob-O-Link. She regularly attended Senior Center activities. She loved Pioneer volleyball and the nephews who saw that she got there and made sure she received the best after game hugs. Dorris also volunteered at Logansport Memorial Hospital for 18 years deciding to retire from wheel chairs pushing at 90.
Genealogy confirmed her mother was part Cherokee ...and Irish and English, which explained her fondness for lumpy mush. She braved riding on her grandson’s Harley Davidson on her 90th birthday. She thrilled in holding her greats and getting them to coo and smile. From her great greats she enjoyed receiving back rubs. She learned to make double batches of her cinnamon rolls and chocolate chip cookies so that enough dough would be left after all the snatches for baking.
Survivors include her daughters, Bonnie Cookerly of Avon and Mary Shepard of Logansport, sons, Kenneth Cookerly and wife Christine of Brownsburg, Gregory Cookerly and wife Kathryn of Brownsburg, and Timothy Cookerly and wife Renee of Siesta Key, Florida. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by son, John Robert Cookerly, brother, Rolland Adkisson and sister, Dorothy Stevens.
Private family services will be held.
Dorris's funeral service will be live streamed at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Rans Funeral Homes & Crematory Facebook page.
