Elmer (Emilio) M. Antonelli, 92, of Logansport, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Woodbridge Health Campus.
Born on July 31, 1922, in Warren, Ohio, he was the third son of the late Palmiero and Carmela (Rufo) Antonelli. He was a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School.
He served in the U.S. Army simultaneously with 2 brothers. He was wounded in action during the 2nd wave of the D-Day invasion at Utah Beach Normandy, France. He was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery, as well as the Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, a Bronze Star, a Sharp Shooter Medal, and the European-African-Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal.
On June 21, 1947, he was married to Mary Firmani, who survives, at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church by the Monsignor John P. Schall.
Mr. Antonelli worked for Thomas Strip Steel in Warren, Ohio, until 1961 when he and his family moved to Logansport to became the co-owner of Posinelli’s Tavern. He later retired from Haynes International in Kokomo, Indiana.
He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, VFW Post #3790, the D.A.V., The American Legion Post #60 and a proud charter member of the William Paca Lodge.
Survivors include his wife Mary, daughters; Elma Venezia and Carmela (Pete) Riggle, both of Logansport, grandchildren; Erica (John) Morrical, Erin (Corey) Burkhart, all of Indianapolis, Michael (Nessa) Venezia, of Gallup, N.M., and Andria Venezia of Chicago, great grandchildren; Owen and Maria Morrical, and Claire and Luke Burkhart. He is also survived by many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families.
He was preceded in death by brothers; Joseph, Henry, Stanley, and Louis, and also infant sister Marie.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2014 at All Saints Catholic Church with Father Michael McKinney officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 8, 2014 at Marocco-Rans Funeral Chapel.
Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery with full military rites.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The School Sisters of Notre Dame. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
