Frederick L. Breckenridge, 88, of South Whitley formerly Lucerne went to be with the Lord at 11:35 a.m., Friday, June 6, 2014 at his daughter’s residence in South Whitley.
Born on December 2, 1925 in Indianapolis, he was the son of the late Frederick, Sr. and Amy (Lawrence) Breckenridge. He grew up in Knightstown and Mays Indiana where he played basketball.
He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran from 1944 to 1946 where he saw action in Germany.
In 1947 he married Alyce M. Dew of Anderson and she preceded him in death in 1985. They had 3 children, Rene Hartman (Dave) of South Whitley, Michael Breckenridge of Rockmart, Georgia and Sandy Hatfield (Randy) of Warsaw. In 1986 he married Mary Ellen Bartlett and she preceded him in death in 2011. He is also survived by 5 step children, Steve, Judy, Rob, Ann, John and all of their families.
Fred was a retired Teacher and Coach. He started his career in Crothersville, Indiana. He then taught shop and mechanical drawing at West Lafayette High School and coached B-Team Basketball for nearly 30 years. He truly loved sports and he enjoyed wintering in St. Petersburg, Florida to watch his favorite team the St. Louis Cardinals spring training.
Fred was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Lucerne.
He will be lovingly missed by his nine grandchildren, Mike Rodgers (Missy), Cheryl Rodgers, Theresa Mueller, Rachell Cooper (Drew), Curtis Hatfield, Ralph Hatfield (Dana), Alyssa Hatfield, Quinn Hatfield (Carly) and Andrea Breckenridge. He is also survived by 14 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Fred was blessed with so many wonderful friends and extended family.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, James Breckenridge.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Marocco-Rans Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tim Minnick officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, June 9, 2014 at the funeral home.
Graveside Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Association and/or the Lucerne Zion United Methodist Church.
