Margaret Killion went home to be with the Lord on May 5, 2024. She was a patient of Aperion
Care in Peru. Margaret was born to Edward and Edith Bender on October 29,1930 in Logansport, IN. She
was one of six children, including Richard, Mary Ellen, Ruth, Edward, Jr. (all deceased) and Louis
Bender of Kokomo. She attended high school in Logansport and graduated with honors in May,
1948. She was married to Glen Helvie in May of 1949. They resided in the country west of Logansport and raised four sons; John Helvie(Peru), Ted Helvie(Royal Center), David Helvie(Marcell, MN), and William Helvie who is deceased.
During their time together, Glen and Margaret raised minks and had large gardens. They
also kept livestock. Later, both Glen and Margaret worked for several years at RBM factory in
Logansport. Glen preceded her in death.
On June 2,1973, Margaret married William Killion in Flora, IN. William also preceded her in
death. During her remarkable lifetime, Margaret was always energetic and supportive of others. She
attended Crooked Creek Christian Church and performed misc. duties there. She always
ensured that her sons went to church with her. She was an example to others as a strong
believer in Jesus Christ.
Margaret was a hard worker and took little time for herself. Her family was her life. She was a
tremendous cook and was especially famous for her mayonnaise cakes. She constantly insisted
waiting on others when they dined at her house. She essentially just “ate on the fly.”
When it was hot, Margaret would take the kids to Lake Cicott to go swimming. She didn’t swim
but enjoyed the beach and being with family. She was gentle and supportive in a very motherly way.
People loved being around her.
Another joy of her life were the grandchildren. She had seven grandchildren; Sherri Helvie-
Carroll(Sean), Indianapolis, Cheryl (Jeff) Wilson, Peru, Faith Helvie, Peru, John(Morgan) Helvie,
Peru, Jeremy(Natalya) Helvie, FL, Sarah Helvie, MN, and Cheyenne Helvie, Galveston. She
also has 16 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
She would always light up when the grandkids stopped in and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for any of them and they often did not want to leave.
One of Margaret's favorite things was mushroom hunting. She got very excited about finding
morels and could hardly contain herself when she found a patch of them. She also liked to tell of
her encounters with “giant” snakes while mushroom hunting.
Margaret was well known for her generosity and the children could not leave her house without being given a box of things to take home. She always had multitudes of items to give to family
members. She is also remembered for giving money for the various needs of her family or the
outright gift of a car to a child of hers. She was the light of our lives and an example to all of us. We will miss her and never forget her.
We are confident that the Good Lord will enjoy having her close.
