Mary I. Carlson, 87, of Logansport, IN went to be with her Lord and Savior at 8:33 a.m., Monday, August 3, 2021 at Logansport Memorial Hospital.
Mary was born on May 12, 1934 in Carroll County, IN, the daughter of John and Ruth (Guy) Magee. At the age of nine her family relocated to the farm in Jefferson Twp, Cass County, IN where Mary lived the rest of her life. Mary attended school at Lake Cicott Elementary and was a 1952 graduate of Burnettsville High School.
On June 29, 1952, she married Allen “Bud” Carlson in a small ceremony at the parsonage home of Rev. Campbell G. Long in Logansport. After nearly 40 years of marriage, Bud preceded Mary in death on May 12, 1992.
Mary was a homemaker and loved working on the farm alongside Bud. By their example, they taught their two sons the value of hard work, humility and kindness. In 1971 Mary also began working in the cafeteria of the Lake Cicott Elementary School. When the school district consolidated in 1977, she moved to Pioneer Elementary School in Royal Center. She was the head cook for many years until her retirement in 2006. Her coworkers were dear friends and she loved the students, always taking time to nourish their souls as well as their bodies.
She was a member of Center Presbyterian Church as a youth and a member of Caley United Methodist Church after her marriage to Bud. Mary’s faith was the foundation of her life. She lived out her calling as a woman of God through her strong prayer life, time spent in daily devotions, playing the piano for church services, and volunteering later in life with Braille Bibles International in Monticello. She also enjoyed reading, keeping a daily diary, and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her sons, Joseph Carlson and wife Deb of Royal Center, IN and Richard Carlson and wife Laura of Austin, MN; brother Dale Magee and wife Kay of Royal Center, IN, sister Phyllis Mathis of Grenada, MS; grandchildren, Rachel Carlson Goings and husband, Nick, Emily Carlson Wood and husband, Brandon, Elizabeth Carlson, Laura Morrical and Paige Longstreth; great grandchildren, Riggin Goings and Shaylee Goings; and nieces and nephews.
