Mary Margaret Muehlhausen

Mary Margaret Muehlhausen, 91, of Logansport, passed away at 7:10 a.m., on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at her residence. Mary Margaret was born on a farm in Carroll County, Indiana on May 18, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Mabel (Fidler) Chambers, Jr., and was a direct descendant of James Chambers, who fought in the Revolutionary War. On September 29, 1940, she married George L. Muehlhausen, who preceded her in death on April 26, 1999. Mary Margaret attended Young America High School, where she was Valedictorian of her graduating class in 1940. She continued her education by taking classes at Butler University and Indiana Business College, where she graduated in 1943. During World War II, Mary Margaret taught English and business classes at Young America High School. In 1947 she retired from teaching, to focus on her family. In addition to raising her three sons, Mary Margaret's other activities included teaching Sunday School classes and singing in the choir at the Baptist Temple of Logansport, serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and supporting her children in their various scholastic and extra curricular activities. She was an avid reader, and also enjoyed camping, and playing the piano. When her children were old enough to no longer require her full time attention, Mary Margaret accepted a position as a part time teacher's assistant for the Special Reading Program for Logansport School children. Thereafter, she was employed as a full time case worker for the Food Stamp Division for the Cass County Welfare Department until deciding to pursue her interest in politics. Mary Margaret was elected to serve two terms as the Cass County Auditor (1980-1988), followed by three consecutive terms as a member of the Cass County Counsel (1989 - 2000). Mary Margaret was the first woman to serve as a member of the Cass County Counsel. Throughout her years of service in public office, Mary Margaret remained a consistent advocate for the conservative use of public funds. Mary Margaret's other activities included her membership in Altrusa Club, Mother's Study Club, League of Women Voters, and Parent Teacher Association. During retirement, she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she also developed an interest in historic Indiana, geneology, and playing bridge in a local club. Survivors include her three sons; George L. Muehlhausen of Sharon, John C. Muehlhausen of Logansport, and James K. Muehlhausen and his wife, Sally Muehlhausen, also of Logansport, eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Robert Chambers, of Phoenix, Arizona, numerous nieces and nephews and a number of cousins living in the Cass County Community. Arrangements have been entrusted to Marocco - Rans Funeral Chapel & Cremation Services. Mary Margaret's services will be private with burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
