Miriam Hizer Reid, 98, formerly of Grass Creek and Logansport, Ind., passed away at 9:45 p.m., Fri., Oct. 31, 2014, at Hickory Creek of Winamac. She spent the last four years at Pleasant View Rest Home in Winamac.
Born June 1, 1916, in Worthington, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Edna (McCreery) Hines. On May 5, 1940, she married Frederick Daniel Hizer. He preceded her in death on April 3, 1972. She later married Glen Reid, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 2002. She also was preceded in death by infant daughter Mary Lynn Hizer.
She graduated as salutatorian from Worthington High School. Miriam earned her bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University and her master’s degree from Ball State University.
Miriam was a music and business teacher at Grass Creek School starting in 1939. She retired from Caston School Corporation in 1977 after 34 years of teaching and touched the lives of thousands of people.
Miriam loved music and enjoyed playing the piano, organ and violin. She played at graduations, weddings and funerals and played accompaniment for school plays and music contests. She sang in and also directed local and state church choirs.
She was a member of Grass Creek United Methodist Church, Delta Kapppa Gamma Society for Women Educators, charter member of Logansport Shrine Guild, 50-year member of Order of Easter Star and charter member of 20 th Century Extension Homemakers Club, among others.
Survivors include her children Alan Hizer (Gloria) of Winamac, Joyce Meurer (Raymond) of Rowayton, Conn., and the Rev. Cynthia Hizer of Covington, Ga.; brother Warren Hines of Worthington; nephews Ed Hines (Peggy) and David Hines (Peggy); and grandchildren Kirk Dooley (Tiffany), Julia Wagner (Jason), Emily Hizer, Daniel Hizer (Rachel) and Andrew Jubera. She also is survived by great grandchildren Molly, Amelia, Annika, Calista, Layla, Trevor, Jackson, Colten and Micah.
Visitations will be Fri., Nov. 7, 2014, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Harrison-Metzger-Rans Funeral Home, 123 E. Main St., Kewanna, where there will also be an OES Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Sat., Nov. 8, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
The service will be held Sat., Nov. 8, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Grass Creek United Methodist Church with Pastor David Sommers officiating, followed by burial at Grass Creek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grass Creek United Methodist Church and/or the National Multiple Sclerosis Association.
