Rethel May Stevens, 79, of Lucerne passed away at 3:05 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Seton Specialty Hospital in Lafayette.
Born on May 30, 1935 in Royal Center, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ruth (Roller) Sell. On August 9, 1953 she married James Stevens at Shiloh Christian Church.
Rethel was a 1953 Royal Center High School graduate and valedictorian.
She retired from the U.S. Postal Service where she had been the Lucerne Postmaster for 32 years. Rethel was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Lucerne for over 60 years. She was also a 50 year member of the Royal Center Order of Eastern Star and the Town and Country Extension Homemakers Club. She enjoyed going on bus trips, shopping, playing Euchre, crocheting, playing piano and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband, James Stevens of Lucerne, daughters, Debb Stevens of Lucerne and Janet Layer (Rich) of Royal Center, sons, Ken Stevens (Cindy) of Royal Center and Mike Stevens (Karen) of Lucerne, brothers, Victor Sell (Ellen) of Royal Center, Glen Sell (Barbara) of Delphi, Carl Sell (Edith) of Logansport and Robert Sell of Royal Center, sister, Leona Ray (Jan) of Burnettsville. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 27, 2014 at Harrison-Metzger- Rans Funeral Home, Royal Center Chapel with Pastor Bruce Russell officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 26, 2014 at the funeral home where there will also be an Order of Eastern Star Service at 7:30 p.m.
Burial will be at Zion Methodist Cemetery in Lucerne.
Memorial contributions may be made to Zion United Methodist Church.
